Summary - Week 16 - Lena Fehrenbach

It has been enlightening to explore the relationship between materials, practicality, and aesthetics in this textile design course. Understanding how various fabric qualities, such as durability, texture, and colorfastness, influence design choices in practical applications was one of the most insightful lessons learned. It was possible to choose materials that satisfy user requirements and safety norms by using concepts like NFPA 701 compliance, fabric colorfastness testing, and knowledge of cleaning codes. I intend to apply this information to my studies and other projects going ahead, especially when creating environments with specialized functional needs like interior design for homes, hotels, or healthcare facilities. Finding out how textiles might address more general design issues, like enhancing acoustics or encouraging sustainability, was a "Aha" moment for me. For instance, the discovery of biodegradable materials and acoustic fabrics demonstrated the possibility o...

Ideal for residential settings as it provides extra cushioning and insulation. Glue-Down Installation: Carpet is directly adhered to the floor using adhesive. Commonly used in commercial settings for stability and durability. Benefits: Seamless appearance. Enhanced sound absorption and comfort. Carpet Tile Installation Carpet tiles are modular and offer flexibility, making them a popular choice for commercial spaces. Installation Methods: Glue-Down Installation: Tiles are adhered individually to the subfloor with adhesive. Ensures durability in high-traffic areas. Peel-and-Stick Installation: Tiles come with pre-applied adhesive backing. Simple and fast insta...

  1. Rebond Foam Padding (6 oz and 8 oz) Rebond foam is made by compressing shredded foam pieces with adhesives. Features: Available in different densities, such as 6 oz (softer) and 8 oz (firmer). Offers excellent durability and cushioning. Often used in seating applications for extra support. Benefits: Cost-effective and versatile. Resistant to wear and tear, making it ideal for high-use furniture. 2. Synthetic Horsehair Padding Synthetic horsehair is a modern alternative to traditional horsehair padding. Features: Made from polyester or other synthetic fibers. Mimics the firmness and resilience of natural horsehair. Hypoallergenic and more affordable than real horsehair. Benefits: Provides excellent support for cushions and backrests. Resistant to moisture and mildew, ideal for long-lasting upholstery. 3. Pile Yard Height and Weight, Cut and Loop, and Multilevel Carpet Styles Weight and Pile Height The length of the yarn threads, or pile height, in carpeting has a big impact on the look, feel, and longevity of the carpet. While greater pile heights (like 1 inch) offer a softer, plusher feel but may be more difficult to clean, shorter pile heights (like 1/4 inch) are usually more resilient and appropriate for high-traffic areas. Another factor affecting durability is weight, expressed in ounces per square yard; heavier carpets typically have denser structure, which increases resistance and longevity. Loop and Cut Carpets To add texture and design, cut and loop carpets mix yarn heights. Shearing the loops in a cut pile produces a pliable surface. Shearing the loops in a cut pile produces a pliable surface. Because loop pile carpets keep their loops, they may be easier to clean and more resilient. Since the interaction of cut and looped fibers can produce complex patterns and designs...
