Summary - Week 16 - Lena Fehrenbach

 It has been enlightening to explore the relationship between materials, practicality, and aesthetics in this textile design course. Understanding how various fabric qualities, such as durability, texture, and colorfastness, influence design choices in practical applications was one of the most insightful lessons learned. It was possible to choose materials that satisfy user requirements and safety norms by using concepts like NFPA 701 compliance, fabric colorfastness testing, and knowledge of cleaning codes. I intend to apply this information to my studies and other projects going ahead, especially when creating environments with specialized functional needs like interior design for homes, hotels, or healthcare facilities.

Finding out how textiles might address more general design issues, like enhancing acoustics or encouraging sustainability, was a "Aha" moment for me. For instance, the discovery of biodegradable materials and acoustic fabrics demonstrated the possibility of creative design solutions that beyond conventional norms. Furthermore, realizing how textiles may affect sensory experiences reaffirmed how crucial it is to choose materials carefully in order to create spaces that are both practical and hospitable.
